Iago’s inability to reason and rationalize Iago is an extremely intelligent character in Shakespeare’s Othello. From the play we learn that he carries valuable and innate qualities that could aid in promoting a life of success. Despite these characteristics, Iago doesn’t receive what he wants and uses his skills in negative ways, acting highly unreasonable. To reflect, Iago feels he has been treated poorly in a few ways which encourage his unreasonable behavior. First and foremost, Iago was in a rage when he wasn’t chosen for the promotion of lieutenant, losing to Cassio. Iago argues that Cassio knew nothing of war, just what he has read from books. Instead of using his apparent wit and cleverness to find a positive solution, Iago establishes an extremely unreasonable and villainous plot to take the position from Cassio. In his plot, Iago implants ideas of infidelity in Othello’s mind involving his wife, Desdemona, with Cassio. When Othello declares his soul is in torment, he demands Iago to bring him visual evidence. Iago does his first horribly unreasonable by lying and saying he can provide circumstantial evidence.
