Adrienne Rich's "Diving into the Wreck" is in ten stanzas, and it is about her personal "dive" into becoming a writer. Adrienne Rich is clearly the speaker in this poem, describing her journey into the writer's world through a magnificent metaphor. Rich conveys a sense of suspense and wonder through narrative as well as reflections of her experience.
In the first stanza, Rich shows a sense of preparedness that she already began to take towards pursuing her dream to become a writer. "First having read the book of myths," conveys the idea that she is fully aware of the myths in society of ones capability to succeed in the artistic world. She prepares herself to take the challenge, by loading the camera, perhaps to register every moment and step taken. The knife-blade represents her will to fight for something she very much wants. In the fourth through seventh lines she is getting ready to undertake any difficulties that might arise on the way, whether it will be an act or feeling displayed by someone or something. On the lines eight through twelve, she states that she does not have anyone to guide her through the steps to become a writer. She has to do it alone...
