1984 Analysis

1984 is not science fiction. The novel’s major conflict centers on the issue of individual freedom. Consequently, Oceania’s technology is far less important than the way it is used. For example, a new language, Newspeak, is established. One may generally think the purpose of creating a new language is to increase individuality. The Party, on the other hand, has completely different intentions. Newspeak is a language which combines, simplifies, and eliminates words from the English language. A large vocabulary is not acceptable; the sole purpose of Newspeak is to limit man’s ability to think. Without the ability to think, one cannot disagree; this ultimately makes Big Brother seem perfect to those outside of the Party.
