American Beauty is a dark comedy from 1999 from the director Sam Mendes .The last tan minute sequence from American Beauty is filled with action and one of the most compelling sequences from the whole film. The sequence reflects this through the lighting, camera angles, camera distances, sound, colours and mise-en-scene throughout the sequence.
Lighting is just one thing that helps to make the sequence so good. The lighting used throughout the sequence is used in such a way that that helps to show the different sides of the characters personalities and how they are feeling. At times it manipulates how we feel towards a character when we should feel a different way towards them.
In one scene Lester and Angela are standing in the kitchen flirting with each other. The lighting on Lester is under lighting from the left-hand side. This makes the way Lester's character is feeling more pronounced. He feels confident and makes it known to Angela that he wants her and by the lighting that we see we see hidden depths to Lester's character...
