The Nurse plays an important role in shaping the evil environment around the hospital for the insane. Nurse Ratched wants to take over the ward and be the devil of the ward. But when Mcmurphy enters the hospital she realizes that all her dreams are going to be diminished. She represents the devil, who wants to prey over the insane people of the ward. As Nurse Ratched and one of the little Nurses are talking, the little nurse questions the Big Nurse, "What, Miss Ratched, is your opinion of this new patient? I mean, gee, he's good-looking and friendly and everything, but in my humble opinion he certainly takes over."(29) And Nurse Ratched replies, "I'm afraid" (29). This answer of the Nurse's provides a clue that she is already beginning to fear Mcmurphy, of his actions towards the patients. She is feeling the fear that is in her mind about Mcmurphy. The big nurse thinks of Mcmurphy as a "manipulator, Miss Flinn, a man who will use everyone and everything to his own ends...
