William Golding is able to focus on the many aspects of man's behaviour through the characters he creates in the novel 'Lord of the Flies.' Golding uses irony and symbols to create various hidden themes in his novel. One may agree that three of these important themes include leadership and power, how weaker and different people can be maltreated and if you take away restraints or controls, people's evil will surface.
One may suggest that leadership, as well as power and order is the first most substantial theme in the novel. The conch symbolizes power because you must hold it if you want to speak and order because it calls together the boys on the island. The children vote for Ralph to be the chief on the island because he is the one who calls them with the conch even though it is Piggy's idea. 'Him with the shell.' 'Ralph! Ralph!'
