Climate changes and greenhouse gas emissions are a global concern. One hundred and sixty
nations took part in negotiations to address these concerns. The resulting Kyoto Protocol has
been ratified by more than ninety five of these one hundred and sixty countries. The Canadian
federal government has, despite opposition from most of the provincial governments, recognized
that the Kyoto Protocol is an important mechanism for addressing environmental problems and
reducing climate change. All levels of government in Canada's federal system need to work
together to achieve the goals of the protocol.
The Kyoto Protocol is based on the theory of global warming. The profound majority of the
world's leading scientists agree that greenhouse gas emissions cause global warming and in turn
severe climate change, not to mention pollution. Internationally mankind currently emits
approximately seven-billion tonnes of carbon into the air every year. Of this seven billion tonnes
Canadians contribute more per capita than any other country in the world. This is why the Kyoto
Protocol is such an important measure - especially in Canada...
