The Pearl begins with the main character, Kino awakening to the crowing of roosters and the barely risen sun. His wife Juana is awake too. She starts a fire and begins cooking corn cakes for breakfast. Little did they know that this day would change the rest of their lives.
Juana had taken their son, Coyotito out of his hanging box, cradle. She cleaned his face, sang to him, and placed him back into the cradle. Moments later movement drew their attention back to the cradle and both Kino and Juana saw it. A scorpion was crawling on the rope that hung the cradle. Coyotito shook the rope, the scorpion fell and Kino jumped to catch it but he missed. It fell on to the baby and stung him...
