This semester, I read Garden of Shadows, by V.C. Andrews. The story is about a woman named Olivia Foxworth. Olivia is a plain, masculine woman who grows up without a mother, learning nothing of how to flirt or how to be attractive to men. To say the least she had absolutely no social skills, so her father tried numerous times to hook her up with young suitors that he knew. None of these men seemed to be drawn to her gawky, tall, anti-socialism, until Malcolm Foxworth. Malcolm shows interest in her during their first encounter and returns for more dates. After two weeks of courting, he asks her to marry him and Olivia accepts, thinking now that her life will be wonderful and full of romance. From day one Olivia began to notice peculiar things about the handsome Malcolm. On the dates they went on, Malcolm never gave Olivia a kiss, which was odd and would make up exuses to herself about his shyness. Not until the night of her wedding reception did she realized that Malcolm had not married her for her for love, but for the facts that she would be faithful, she would be getting her father’s inheritance and she was to be able to provide him with healthy children.
