Discriminatory Practices Concerning Gay Marriages
In this report we focus on the hotly debated issue of the legality of same-sex marriages. Lesbians and gay men now seek the same chance as heterosexuals to exercise their Constitutional right to marry the person they love. Lesbian and gay couples seek the right to marry because their relationships, even under domestic partnership laws, are not given the same recognition or benefits as heterosexual married couples, despite their responsibilities and commitment. In fact, lesbian and gay couples often face intense discrimination in such areas as federal marriage rights, family values, religious acceptance, and social credibility.
Delaware Laws
Delaware has a history of holding on to more conservative values and expressing intolerance of minorities. For example, Delaware actually waited 36 years (until 1901) to outlaw slavery after it became the law of the land in 1865. Although the United States guaranteed black citizens the right to vote in 1870, Delaware's Jim Crow laws stood until 1963, preventing blacks from voting until then. A law passed in 1996 strictly defines marriage as one man and one woman for federal purposes, such as income tax filings, and bars the state from recognizing homosexual marriages from other states. We will provide facts that support the inequality of preventing the civil union of same sex partners.
