Dana Haughton, who is also known as Aaliyah, was born January 16, 1979 in Brooklyn, New York. At the age of five her family moved to Detroit. Dana spent her teenage years there. In Detroit Aaliyah became interested in music and singing, and her parents supported her in her hobby by introducing her to many different styles of music. At the age of six was given a small role in her elementary school's play of "Annie". Playing the role of a young orphan inspired her to continue singing which would eventually bring her to stardom.
She went to auditions around Detroit hoping that she would be picked and given a chance to prove her talents. At the age of ten she performed her own rendition of Chaka Khan's "My Funny Valentine" in a "Star Search" competition. She didn't win the competition but it was a good learning experience for her. One year later she got an opportunity to sing with Glady's Knight's troupe on a Las Vegas stage...
