Charles Haddon Spurgeon was born on the nineteenth of June, 1834, in Kelvedon,
Essex, England. His parents were John and Eliza Spurgeon, and his father was an
Independent minister. Due to financial and health problems, Charles was raised by his
grandparents in Stambourne until he was six years old.
When he was ten, Charles was visiting his grandparents when he had a remarkable
encounter. Richard Knill, a missionary to India and Russia, was visiting the area, and he
and Charles became good friends. Before he left, he told Charles and his family, "This
child will one day preach the gospel, and he will preach it to great multitudes". Because of
his father telling hi that it was dangerous for one to enter the ministry without being
converted, Charles began to pray the he would "experience the person of Christ".
Several years passed, with several pleas for salvation, but Charles was unconvinced
of his salvation. Finally, in January of 1850, he gained the assurance he desired. he was in
a Primitive Methodist Chapel, and the regular minister was not there...
