CASE STUDY: "IDENTIFYING & UNDERSTANDING TRENDS IN THE MARKETING ENVIRONMENT"
Question 1:
Given the trend in obesity among Americans, which industries stand to benefit the most? Why?
A survey conducted by Harris Poll (Harris Interactive 2002) on the Americans has shown that 80 percent of the adults aged 25 and above are obese, and this percentage, unfortunately, had been on a steady rise since 1983.
However, the poll has also shown that as much as 60 percent of the people in this obese group are trying to lose weight. As more Americans start to realize the negative impacts that obesity could have on their health, we can be confident in taking on the assumption that the percentage of the obese people who will try to lose weight will increase further.
Based on this assumption, we can then focus on the industries that could cater to the needs and wants of the obese people who want to lose weight. We shall classify these into two sections, mainly the service industry, and the food and beverage industry.
Firstly, in the service industry, slimming centers, image consulting firms and fitness centers will stand to benefit the most. Some Americans probably would choose the easy way out to shed off those extra pounds of fats by spending money on weight-loss programs at various slimming centers or hiring personal consultants to help them achieve maximum weight loss, while others may tend to rely more on themselves by making it a point to go to the fitness centers to knock out those unwanted excess pounds.
Secondly, in the food and beverage industry, companies which will tend to benefit greatly would most probably be the ones who manufacture or import medicines or pills that will aid slimming, and companies who are very much into health food...
