Maya Angelou (Poet)
Maya Angelou was a black American writer and actress who was the woman who would be a featured guest at Bill Clinton's 1993 inauguration into Presidency.
She was born on April 4, 1982 in St. Louis Missouri. Her original name was Marguerite Johnson, but as she was growing up her childhood nickname was Maya and then when she married her husband she took his last name which was Angelos. As Maya grew up she moved to California, and at age three, Maya's parents were divorced. She was taken to Arkansas, where she was raised by her grandmother. After a few years, at age seven, Maya was raped by her mother's boyfriend. This traumatized Maya and she became mute for 5 years, and it was during this time that she began to read a lot.
