"Tell me and I forget; Show me and I remember; involve me and I understand." This quotation was brought to my attention by my Scoutmaster several years ago. He didn't know who originally said it, but told us if we learned its meaning, we would lead more fulfilling lives. At first, I didn't understand the quote or why he was even telling it to us. Over the next few years, our troop became very involved in various kinds of community service. Initially, this service was just a requirement in order to obtain merit badges. In time, certain projects such as repeatedly visiting a nursing home, working in a food pantry, or bowling for charity brought about a great sense of gratification and accomplishment. I think the interaction with these members of my community taught me more than any lecture, lesson, or demonstration could have. I believe that my involvement in the community has played a major part in my development and how I have grown as a person.
You have to participate in your community in order to understand it...
