Positive Involvement for a Positive Community

"Tell me and I forget; Show me and I remember; involve me and I understand." This quotation was brought to my attention by my Scoutmaster several years ago. He didn't know who originally said it, but told us if we learned its meaning, we would lead more fulfilling lives. At first, I didn't understand the quote or why he was even telling it to us. Over the next few years, our troop became very involved in various kinds of community service. Initially, this service was just a requirement in order to obtain merit badges. In time, certain projects such as repeatedly visiting a nursing home, working in a food pantry, or bowling for charity brought about a great sense of gratification and accomplishment. I believe the interaction with these members of my community taught me more than any lecture, lesson, or demonstration could have.
There are other ways to be an active part of your community. To be an integral part of a working community one must be hard working, devoted, and dependable...
