... ‘Carmen’ was composed in 1873-1874 libretto by Henri Meilhac and Ludovic Halevy. ...
The character of Carmen has been said to be based on a woman Bizet and his librettists met during a trip to Spain when Bizet was 27 years old. ... They shortened her name to Carmen, since the story was set in Paris not Spain. However, unbeknownst to Bizet, who was a linguist, the word carmen in the Latin language means song of evil, and the word carmen in his native tongue of French meant charm. To combine the two definitions would in a sense describe the character of Carmen perfectly.
The story of ‘Carmen’ begins in Paris during the 1820’s. ... In the crowd of cigarette girls is Carmen, the popular gypsy beauty. Before departing from the town square Carmen focuses her attention to Don Jose, who tries to ignore her. ... He promises his love and fidelity to Micaela in spite of Carmen’s temptations. The next day a rumble erupts at the cigarette factory and Carmen is arrested. Don Jose is ordered to take Carmen to jail. But engulfed by her ways, he agrees to meet Carmen and allows her to escape.
The two plan to meet at Lillas Pastia’s Inn, where Carmen and her friends Frasquita and Mercedes stay. While Zuniga, the officer that ordered Carmen to jail, and the bullfighter Escamillo fight to win Carmen’s attention, she thinks of Don Jose.
