History of the Clarinet
The earliest clarinet dates back into the early 1700s. It was invented by Johan Christoph Denner, a renowned flute-maker. Denner devised the clarinet by improving the chalumeau, also known as the small mock trumpet, which is the clarinet's closest antecedent. The chalumeau was the first accurate single reed instrument, until the clarinet. The instrument was named 'clarinet' due to the nickname of the chalumeau, which was 'clainetto'.
The making of the clarinet was similar to the chalumeau; however Denner changed parts to create the desired sound. The mouth piece was modified and keys were added. The clarinet had flaws, like all new inventions, and for that reason was rarely used, except for in few operas.
