Leaving
A film which has a particularly effective opening is Leaving directed by Andy Johnson. The film is based in Greenock in Glasgow in 1960 and is about the last few weeks at school for a group of three friends. The main character Nicky lives with his uncle who works in the shipyards. His father left home when he was a young boy of five and his mother committed suicide a few years later. The opening scene is effective as it sets the scene for the film as highlights the hteme which is carried on throughout the film in a number of different ways. The theme of the film like the title is leaving.
The films begins by going straight into the opening scene where 5 years old Nicky is in bed and in the background his parents are arguing and his father leaves home. There is a close up of Nicky listening to what is happening and on his mother can be heard crying and saying,
"How will we live?"
The opening scene is linked to the next scene by the crying of Nicky's mother on the soundtrack. This scene begins with an extreme close-up of Nicky now aged 15 years old sitting up in the same bed...
