What do you think about the idea of a Female Tradition in Writing, espoused by Elaine Showalter and Others?
Although women have been writing for hundreds of years, the literary canon has mainly consisted of male writers. ... Since the turn of the last century there has been a growing movement of female literary critics who have highlighted this gender bias within literature. And it is in the past four decades with the advent of feminist literary theory that we have gained new perspectives and insight into the meaning of women’s writing. ...
It would be impossible to cover all aspects of the female tradition in writing in this short essay. So in order to gain a better understanding of where some feminist literary theory is coming from, I have focussed on examining the work of Elaine Showalter and how she envisions the meaning of the ‘female tradition’ in writing. ... Using this information as a backdrop, I will go on to give a personal perception of what the female tradition in writing means to me. ... The feminist critique challenges the place of women in such writing and asks what assumptions have been made regarding the female characters and their place in literature that has been written by men, with what she describes as ‘ideological assumptions’ as to the role of women. ... Rather, we should focus upon the female writer herself, who, through her own female experience of what it is like to be a woman, is better able to convey to her reader, the significance of being a woman.
