Making the decision to embrace the straight edge culture has made a huge impact on my life, as well as others. By following the straight edge principals, it has shown me the true meaning of dedication, commitment, and appreciation, not to mention setting a good example for others around me. It has brought me closer to many diverse people, and helped me gain respect from people who I have never known, shaping me into a respectable person.
Straight Edge is more than a philosophical offshoot of the punk movement started by the punk legends Minor Threat in the early 80's. The basic tenet of the philosophy centers around the issue of self-control. My goal, as well as other countless sXe(straight edge)r's is to regain as much personal control over our own life as possible. sXe is the only youth counter-culture to actively discourage drug use, alcohol use, and casual sex. This isn't dogmatic, there are no hard rules: No drugs, No alcohol, No Promiscuous sex: these are morals and values any man could live by. These may be easy guidelines to follow, but sXe is a true commitment. Peer pressure is just as strong-if not stronger than-it was in the 80's to fit in with the crowd...
