The American Solar Challenge is famous for being the longest solar car race in the world covering 2,300 miles on route 66. It used to be called sunracyce during the years of 1990-1999 and in 2001 it was given it's new name the American Solar challenge. The race format includes as many as 35 teams around the world who will compete with their solar cars in this race. The cars are designed by students across the United States and also from Canada. The solar vehicles are to travel from Chicago, IL to Claremont, CA from the famous Route 66. One of the most obvious requirements of the race is that every vehicle in the race should be able to maneuver with solar cells which soak up the sun's rays and power the vehicle at speeds of up to 50 miles an hour to 70 miles per hour.
Wednesday July 23, 2003 the University of Minnesota raced to a second place finish in the American Solar Challenge 2003 in the city of Claremont California. However it wasn't enough to beat the first place team from the University of Missouri Rolla. The reason why the University of Minnesota Solar Vehicle project was able to place 2nd was that it had a lot of years of experience in building solar vehicles and they began solar vehicle projects by undergraduate students in the Institute of Technology in 1990.
