Water safety is a topic that not everyone takes seriously. Every year about 300 children under the age of five drown in swimming pools alone. In addition, more than
2, 000 children in that age group are treated at the hospital for near drowning. These statistics are just for swimming pools and children under the age of five, there are also drownings at the lake, ocean, and rivers.
Home pool drownings are the most common in the United States. Most drownings occur when a child is being watched by both parents, and had been out of sight for less than five minutes. If a child ever comes up missing the first place to check is in the pool. Go to the edge of the pool and scan the entire pool, bottom, and surface, as well as the surrounding pool area. The pool is always checked first because seconds count.
