Frederick Douglass was the first slave under the control of Mrs. Sophia Auld. Initially when Douglass met her she was a woman of the kindest heart and finest feelings. In fact Douglass was astonished at her goodness. Mrs. Sophia Auld was unlike any white woman young Frederick Douglass had ever seen. In fact Douglass was not even sure how act to in her presence. The normal crouching servility of a slave was not necessary when in her presence. This behavior was often expected by traditional slaveholders, but Mrs. Sophia Auld actually seemed to be disturbed by it...
