The one who emphasizes the importance of beliefs may argue that no matter what the situation, one should adhere to his or her beliefs instead of compromising them, for compromising one's means betraying him or her. As far as I am concerned, compromising or adhering to one's beliefs depends on the situations: if the beliefs we sustain are truths, we should try our best to adhere to them; on the contrary, we should give up them.
Firstly, it is unwise to blindly adhere to the beliefs without discriminating whether the beliefs are right or false, truth or fallacy. As a matter of fact, whether the beliefs are right or false depend on the situation of history or society. It is likely that a belief represents the trends of the development of societies at the beginning. However, with the development of the societies, they might lag behind the societies, and sustaining the beliefs might hinder the paces of development of societies to some extent. For example, Kan Youwei, a firmly social ameliorator in late nineteenth century in China, advocated his theories of amelioration to the publics and emperor of China. His theories of amelioration, though were advanced at that time, were proved to be conservative in 1920s' in China. Disregarding the change of societies, Kan Youwei stubbornly adhered to his beliefs instead of receiving new ideas of revolutions, and he was rejected by people of China in the end.
