All of the texts studied show the notion of retreating from the global as a response to a difficult world. Each text depicts the global world as something that is evil and something that destroys the local. Retreating from the global is seen as a way of getting rid of the difficult world.
The Shipping News by Annie Proulx, 1993, tells the story of a man named Quoyle who moves from New York to Newfoundland and finds happiness. In the text, the global is depicted as something that does not fit into the local world. This is seen when we hear the story of the glove factory. We hear that a glove factory opened in Newfoundland. It stayed open very shortly and then closed as it failed. This is an example of the global world, that is, industry, trying to move in on the local world. Evidently, the factory failed, thus telling the responder that global values have no place with local values...
