Executive Summary
Our team intends to compare and contrast the Computer Software Industry. Our focus will be on the Operating Systems section of the market. The technology industry is a very difficult market to compete in successfully because it changes so rapidly. Companies need to continually spend money in research and development which drives up costs and decreases the profit margin.
Microsoft and Red Hat are the two public companies examined in this paper. These two organizations were chosen because of the differences in their operating systems and also because they both use very different strategies to stay ahead in the market. These strategies are based on the ideas of the company's founders, Bill Gates of Microsoft and Bob Young of Red Hat.
Microsoft tends to focus on stability, interoperability, and the business and education segments of the market. Microsoft focuses on software and allows other companies to focus on the hardware for its software to run, such as Dell, HP, and Toshiba.
