What is your opinion on racism in New Zealand? We, as New Zealanders all have to deal with this issue every day. For some people, this is just having a laugh and teasing someone with a different skin colour, while on the other hand, the person being teased can feel very depressed. The word racism is actually a relatively new word to our dictionaries. It has only been in the dictionary for about 30 years. The definition of racism in the Webster dictionary is as follows: “The assumption that physco-cultural traits and capacities are determined by biological race and that the races differ decisively from one another, which is usually coupled with a belief in the inherent superiority of a particular race and it’s right to dominate over others.” This form of racism has been dominant in Afrikaner Dom, which those of you who were in Mr McCartney’s year 11 English class will remember from the video we studied – ‘The Power of One’ which dealt with racism within the Africa many years ago. The white people were ‘in charge’ and the black people were used as slaves and kept in imprisonment camps. White South Africans were known as Afrikaners back then and they wanted to be different and they got their wishes. But now that people these days are more against racism, why is it that the Afrikaners still want to be different? Well if they want to be different why not let them?
