Rivalry between children often occurs because teachers or parents mistakenly believe that everyone must be treated equally. The reality is that teachers cannot treat everyone equally. But they can treat them fairly. Fairness implies giving favors in a consistent manner. Equality, on the other hand, implies giving favors in an exact or identical manner. Very rarely can a teacher give all of their students the attention in an equal manner. I believe that some kids are more "book smart" and others are more "worldly smart." The father said that one of his children was academically smart while another was good with hands on activities such as working with animals. Some children are more athletic while others more gifted intellectually or socially. To treat each child equally would be treating most children incorrectly...
