Modernism (avant-garde) is the general term of many American and European literary trends. The more influencing treads are expressionism, surrealism, futurism, Dadaism, imagism, stream of consciousness, theater of absurd, new novels and black humor. Modernism bragged about anti-tradition and anti-ration, and possessed rich new consciousness. It concentrated its efforts on depicting the subject who has no bidders in traditional literature, and continuously created more artistic forms and styles. This not only destroyed the established literary tradition of ancient Greek and Rome, but also affected the whole value system of western traditional culture and formed the prevailing wind in western literature in 20th century.
