Social interaction is 'a sequence of happenings between two or more people when they meet face to face' (Burton and Dimbleby, 1995, p 90) It is a part of everyday life, without realising it we interact with others using both verbal and non verbal channels of communication. Whether intentionally using verbal language or unconsciously non verbal forms. Social interaction is a major aspect of our communication and interaction with others and this is most obvious when there is a group situation.
It is obvious that in a situation where there is group interaction that there will be varied approaches and methods used within the group to communicate with other members. It is likely that the members of the group will have differing values, attitudes and beliefs due to their individual socialisation. Although the members of the group will likely have different backgrounds they must all agree on a group goal, it is the purpose of the group to achieve this goal. 'In many cases the achievement of the group goal or goals results in disbandment'. (Hargie, 1994, p294) So the very thing that brought about the group is often the same aspect that ends the group. Although there are exceptions for example football teams primary purpose is to win the Premiership but although teams such as Manchester United have won on several occasions they still remain a group and strive for the same goals.
In a group cohesion is a very important feature and it is necessary for a group to be cohesive if they are to be effective and successful in achieving their goals...
