Were the legionaries at an advantage compared to civilians? Did the experience of war develop the skills of the army physician and did this make him better then any ordinary civilian doctor?
The Army offered considerable opportunity for a young doctor to develop his expertises. When treating wounds it gave him the chance to learn more about internal organs and gain a fuller understanding of anatomy and physiology, which he would never achieve in a civilian practice. By all means a civilian doctor tired to avoid surgery as suggested by Celsus who said only attempt surgery as a last resort. Celsus suggests this for many reasons. There were many factors that made surgery extremely difficult. Firstly surgeons did not have good knowledge of the human anatomy and this meant, operations were not always successful. Human dissection was not encouraged, except in Egypt where the dead were mummified. This contributed to the poor reputation that surrounded medicine...
