Today we are forced to address a catastrophe involving serious teenage misbehaviour. Behaviours that involve violence, truancies, drugs & alcohol, and repeated abuse are escalating into serious issues. Add to the fact that adolescence, even at its best, is usually a chaotic and emotionally charged period of life for both youth and the young adults throughout their lives, furthermore it represents a vital transition in which a child learns to become and adult. As teens enter this transitional period, it is natural for them to challenge the limits that have been set for them, and to rebel against the rules that limit them. And yet, they need this period of time to learn to set rules for themselves in a responsible manner. Most teens are very outspoken about their feelings and preferences, but they need some guidance as they turn to independence. If this guidance becomes totally authoritarian, youth will begin to rebel, and nothing is gained, in fact more might be lost, little is learned and everyone becomes hurt. Teens need a place of safety from which to address the stress of everyday life, a place to let down their guard and express themselves freely without hesitation. Nevertheless, this secure environment must also provide boundaries that protect youth from their own, "I'm invincible," way of thinking. Before teenagers get out of control, adults and teens must compromise and learn to learn from each other...
