Bret Harte
Bret Harte fought through childhood poverty to become the leader in the literary age of realism. Bret Harte's life covered the entire world; from New York to San Francisco to Germany. The way he grew up and lived, the respect given to him by his elders and his ability to grasp a very diverse audience is what made Bret Harte a great author.
Bret Harte was born in Albany New York on August 25, 1839. He had 2 brothers and a sister(names not known). Bret Harte left school at the age of 13 for economical reasons. While he was in school and out of school as a young child he constantly studied the works of Shakespeare, Dickens, Irving, Froissart, and Cervantes(Zeiger). In 1854 Bret Harte and his mother moved to California. His family spent a short time period in a mining camp and it is believed that he gained a lot of ideas for his stories while in the mining camp(Bret).
