Thomas Hardy is the author of Far from the Madding Crowd as well as Tess of D'urbervilles. Both stories show similarity in their character makeup. For example, there is a woman in each story who is the focus point. Also, there are important male characters in each that play key roles because they come into this woman's life and end up falling in love with her. In Tess of D'urbervilles, Angel Clare falls in love with Tess, and in Far From the Madding Crowd, Gabriel Oak falls in love with Bathsheba Everdene. In Hardy's novel, Far From The Madding Crowd, Gabriel Oak can be compared and contrasted to Angel Clare of Tess of D'urbervilles.
Gabriel falls in love with Bathsheba Everdene after she saves his life one night. He asks her to marry him and she refuses and says she doesn't love him. Hardy makes Gabriel out to be a humble and honest character which turns out to be true because of his actions in the story.
