Sahara is a story of the adventures of two men, Dirk Pitt and Al Giordino, as they attempt to uncover the mystery of the toxic pollution that threatens the waters of the Niger River as it spreads into the oceans that will eventually affect the entire world.
The men work for NUMA, the National Underwater and Marine Agency, and have been friends and partners since childhood. Dirk Pitt is the man of action who lives by the moment without regret. He is a graduate of the Air Force Academy, son of a United States senator, and is special projects director for NUMA. He is a courageous and a man of complete honor, but of absolute ruthlessness whenever necessary. His friend and partner, Al Giordino, is the only man that Dirk really respects and trusts to work with. Al is shrewd and street smart. He is described as dark, short, and as compact as a barrel of concrete. He is also very good with mechanical work. They have worked together on many dangerous missions and both have saved the other on numerous occasions under Admiral James Sandecker, the commander of NUMA...
