Chinatown Winnipeg has over 20,000 Chinese-Canadians; their culture can be thoroughly experienced between James and Logan Aves. to the West of Main St. Chinatown was established in 1909, and today it has more to see and do than ever before. The shopping and dining experience is one you'll never forget, as are the shows and architecture. The Winnipeg Chinese Cultural & Community Centre, in the Dynasty Building, is a centre of arts and learning, with many classes and servies. The library in the building is the only Chinese library in Manitoba. Zoo In 1904, the bustling city of Winnipeg purchased 283 acres of prairie and forest along the Assiniboine, a few kilometres west of the city limits. Before World War I, a beautifully landscaped park had taken shape, complete with roadways, sports facilities and a great Pavillion. This greenspace is still as attractive today, with statues and displays along its winding drives. Today the park is as popular as ever, with such wonderful attractions as a conservatory, dozens of acres of sporting fields, and a zoo. The beauty of Manitoba's environment is reflected in the formal and informal (English) gardens, and the picturesque duck pond. With tThe Conservatory: Being the longest-established conservatory in Western Canada, this institution includes tropical gardens, exotic and local flowers, and a foyer filled with Winnipeg art. Admission is free, Tours on request. Leo Mol Sculpture Garden: It is an honour for the park to have an entire sculpture garden made up of the works of Leo Mol, the reknowned Winnipeg artist. These more-than-breathtaking grounds are open year-round, while the interior gallery, with sketches, a gift shop, and moulds, is open from May 31 to September 1. Assiniboine Park Zoo: The zoo is a very popular local attraction for young people and adults alike. There are more than 1,300 animals to see, including monkeys, a tiger, four different species of bear... and there are countless peacocks wandering wherever they please. There are many educational displays at the zoo, such as those in the Kinsmen Discovery Centre, which features a self-sufficient ecosystem full of creatures who no longer need to be fed by zookeepers. The Tropical House holds reptiles, including an American Alligator, while tropical birds fly freely overhead.
