This story is about a man entering the middle life and his relations toward his new girlfriend and his ex-wives.
On this particular day it is the 24th of December, and our main character, Gregory Dodd, is driving in his Audi with presents for his new girlfriend, Susan, and her three children. In the past he has been married twice, and with his second ex-wife he has three children that are celebrating Christmas with their mother this year.
While he is driving around, he is introducing us to his new girlfriend and telling us about her past and their relationship, and we learn that they come from the same past with a couple of ex'es in the luggage.
Suddenly he is interrupted in his reflections on his life as he drives into a Chrysler. Two black men steps out of the car, and one of them then hits him hard in the face. He does not really understand what happens, but he gets very angry and then sentimental. After this incidence he does not want to resume his drive because of some personal issues that have entered his mind, but he does it anyway, so his new girlfriend can comfort him.
