There are many schools of thought on how children attain reading skills. Some state that the ability to read and write are part of a natural language acquisition. Their position is that children will acquire the skills necessary to read and write if they are immersed in a print rich environment. Research has shown that there are some children who will learn to read and write in this manner. Indeed, these fortunate children will attain literacy regardless of the methodology employed by their first teachers. Research has also shown that a large percentage of children will not learn to read and write through immersion. These children require direct instruction. They must be provided with a strategic and systematic method of instruction in order to succeed as readers and writers and they will succeed when this is provided.
