"Cathedral" and Characterization
Characterization, as defined by X.J. Kennedy and Dana Gioia is as follows: the techniques a writer uses to create, reveal, or develop the characters in a narrative. In many stories, authors do not use characterization to develop characters very well. An author tells us exactly what the character thinks and does. We must not believe that the character thinks anything different from what the story states. Creating a character in a story may mean nothing more than stating a name and an occupation.
