Anne had lost her parents when she was three months old, and had been an orphan ever since. She had lived with two families, to take care of their children, and then four months at an orphanage. Marilla and Matthew Cuthbert, who are siblings, adopted Anne. They lived at Green Gables, which is a farm. Green Gables is located in Avonlea, which is a rural-like town, on Prince Edward Island in Canada. Unfortunately, Matthew died from old age, when Anne had just graduated from Queens. One night, Jane Andrews, Gilbert Blyth, and Anne were talking about whipping their students, as punishment. Jane Andrews, and Gilbert Blyth were friends of hers, who had also graduated from Queens to become teachers as well. Anne's first day of teaching goes well.
