Medical dominance has been described as a feature of the health care system in most English-speaking countries. This dominance is exhibited in a number of ways which include professional autonomy of doctors, their control over patients, and the dominance of health professionals. (Gair, Hartery, 2001) The purpose of this essay is to identify the issue with in the extract "Pealing the in onion". The main purpose of this essay will cover the historical, cultural and structural aspects of medical dominance and a critical analysis of medical dominance will be discussed.
Medical dominance is less than a century old. In the nineteenth century, medicine as a science began to develop which lead it to become a full time occupation. During the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries most people did not consult a doctor, rather a more affordable option such as homoeopaths, chemists, Chinese herbalists and midwives. In 1862 the Victorian Government became the first to give doctors advantages such as the exclusive rights to medical titles, and the rights to sign death certificates. (Germov, 2002)
Germov suggests that within Australia medicine dominates every facet of health care delivery.
