'Man- made hormones estrogen and progesterone mimic the ones your body naturally produces monthly. Estrogen prevents the egg from maturing and being released from the ovary. No egg no pregnancy1. Beginning at a prescribed point during the menstrual cycle, one hormonal pill is taken every day for 21 days. For the next 7 days, a placebo is taken (usually a sugar pill). This medication is used to prevent pregnancy or to regulate your menstrual cycle. This is when your period starts. Normally, it is lighter than your regular period due to the different hormones. Even though they are only sugar pills, they will still prevent pregnancy.
