The Faerie Queene
The Faerie Queene is an epic by Edmund Spenser. In this excerpt from The Faerie Queene, the young knight confronts a foul monster and her offspring and deals with them as any gallant knight would. Because The Faerie Queene is an allegory, a much deeper meaning is revealed through symbolism and imagery. The knight represents holiness, his lady represents truth, and the monster represents evil. Spenser uses the image of a knight fighting a monster to express the conflict between good and evil.
The knight goes on an adventure to win the admiration of his lady. While on their adventure they come upon a dark, gloomy cave. Inside the cave a monster that is half woman and half serpent is feeding her young. The monster's young represent the fruit of evil, which feed from their source. As the knight enters, his shiny armor reflects light into the cave...
