Naturalization is the process an immigrant goes through so that they can become an American citizen. The process of naturalization is not a required act, but is a completely voluntary act. It is up to the immigrant if they would like to become naturalized or not. The first naturalization law was passed by Congress in 1790. From 1790 through most of the twentieth century, an immigrant was allowed to become naturalized in any court of law. With this being done, immigrants typically went to the court that was most convenient to them, which would be a county court. The law vary from state to state, and the different types of courts have also varied.
