In the poem "Doesn't He Realize," Ono No Komachi uses various techniques that some readers will not be able to notice. One, for example, would be the use of free verse, which means it does not have meter, nor does it have a rhyme scheme. This poem, however, was translated from a Japanese text, which could add to the reason of why there is no rhyme or meter. With a mere six lines, Komachi is able to deliver a meaningful poem where the readers can actual relate to.
Free verse is used in this poem to set its tone. The poem says, "Doesn't he realize that I am not like the swaying kelp in the surf." In these few lines, the reader will be able to visualize the scenery. The free verse adds to this visualization, as the free verse is swaying, just like the kelp in the ocean.
The meaning of this poem is very simple, yet complex at the same time. Some symbols one might want to note would be the following: kelp, surf, and a seaweed gatherer...
