... Since the 1970’s urban sprawl has continued to become a popular trend of both major and minor cities within the United States. With the progression of urban sprawl, American’s are becoming increasingly aware of both negative and positive side effects placed on society. While many believe urban sprawl to provide the American dream, others are concerned with the numerous negative effects of economic, environmental, and quality-of-life issues (Jackson).
Reid Ewing, an associate professor in the College of Engineering and Design at Florida International University of Miami defines urban sprawl as “a random development characterized by poor accessibility of related land uses such as housing, jobs, and services like schools and hospitals. ... Typically, urban sprawl is found in the rural areas outside an urban community. One of the leading factors contributing to the increase of urban sprawl has been the decentralization of employment, and tax incentives to industrial employers looking to develop in suburban areas. With these underlying causes, urban sprawl has widely gained popularity not only in the Marion County, but also throughout the United States.
Some analysts of urban sprawl believe outer development helps to create a positive morale for the average citizen in search of the American dream. ...
Homes located in the desired sprawl areas are generally more expensive homes then the homes with in the urban community. ... “Many analysts originally thought that suburban growth would create more revenue for urban areas due to property taxes. ... Public spending also triggers urban sprawl. ... Another effect of urban sprawl are the homes in the outer laying suburbs appreciate while the values of the homes in the urban areas and even connecting suburbs will decline. ... “According to the Agriculture Department, the United States lost approximately four million acres of prime farmland to urban development between 1982 and 1992.
