... Two musicians who have included their lives in their music are
B.B. King who is the king of blues, and Elvis Presley, who was the king of rock and roll.
Different types of music and lifestyles have come and gone, but the lives and music of
B.B. King and Elvis Presley have remained intriguing and alive throughout the years
(King and Ritz, 1996 ; Denenberg, 2001). There are many differences and similarities
between Elvis Presley and B.B. King, which may be the cause of the resemblance in their
lives and music.
The adolescent years of King and Presley were very similar. ... King was born in Indianola Mississippi (Danchin, 1998),
and Presley was born in Tupelo Mississippi (Brown & Broeske, 1997). King was one of
five children (Danchin, 1998). Presley would have had an older twin brother named
Jesse Garon, but unfortunately, Jesse was stillborn, leaving Elvis to be brought up as an
only child (Denenberg, 2001). ... As a matter
of fact, the Presleys were dirt poor (Denenberg, 2001), and King had to start working in
the cotton fields at the age of nine in order to help support his family (Rees & Crampton,
1991). Both of these men were very close their mothers (Denenberg, 2001 ; King & Ritz,
1996). King was said to be his mother’s favorite of the five children, because he was the
one who was the sweetest to her. His mother even specifically requested to see B.B. right
before she died (King & Ritz, 1996). Presley grew very close to one another, because of
all of the time that they spent alone together. They spent so much alone time together,
because Presley’s father was in jail, and Gladys (Presley’s mother) was afraid to let little
Elvis out of her sight (Denenberg, 2001). Besides the fact that his mother died, growing
up for B.B. King was very similar to the way that Elvis Presley grew up.
While growing up, music was a very big part in the lives of Elvis Presley and
B.B. King. When Presley was young, he made his own guitar out of a broom handle, a
cigar box, and some string that he found (Brown & Broeske, 1997). Soon after, for
Presley’s tenth birthday, he received his first real guitar (Daily, 1996).
