Seth is an ideal figure in which to define courage. She had the bravery and the courage to kill her own child that she loved, rather than have her live the horrendous life of a slave as her mother, Sethe, once lived. As a young child, Sethe watched her own mother be hanged from a tree and die because of the hatred of white men. This incident only foreshadows how difficult Sethe’s life will be. When Sethe was pregnant with her fourth child, she was soon to be on her way as a refugee and become a free woman. But before this dream were to come true, she was tied face down and whipped so many times that the scars on her back had come to take the image of a tree, due to the brutal slashes of the whip. She was tied down once again, but this time on her back. As the top of Sethe’s dress was torn off by two white men, the men began to steal her babies milk so Sethe’s babies will become hungry. African American women were often sexually abused along with physical abuse. While still pregnant, Sethe escaped and ran her way to freedom. Throughout this journey without shoes, her feet became overwhelmed with soars and cuts. As she laid down to rest in agony, a woman heard her cries of pain and came to see what it was. When she found Sethe, the words that came out of her mouth were “A real nigger.” (Demme, Jonathan) Though this woman was abrupt with her words, she had a kind heart and helped Sethe as much as possible. The woman bandaged Sethe’s feet and helped her on her way to the direction of Ohio. Once they came to the river, both became overwhelmed with joy and relief but much to their surprise Sethe went into labor at that very moment. The woman helped Sethe through the agonizing labor and was so proud and honored that she was able to help. In honor of the woman, Sethe named her baby girl, Denver, after her. With her newborn, Sethe crossed the river and became a free woman. With a settled life in Ohio, Sethe owned her own house with her husband, mother, two sons, and two daughters to manage the labor of it.
