The Great Gatsby
Gatsby believed in the green light, the orgastic future that year by year recedes before us. It eludes us then, but that's no matter-tomorrow we will run faster, stretch out our arms farther. And one fine morning-----
So we beat on, boats against the current, borne back ceaselessly into the past.
In the book, The Great Gatsby, the desire to achieve the American Dream is portrayed through out the book. I will explain the meaning of the passage above and what it means to me.
In the gloss, Gatsby is saying that he believes in the American Dream and is constantly pursuing to achieve it. when he says "tomorrow we will run faster, Stretch out our arms further" he is saying that every day he will try harder and harder till that one day when it finally happens and he has reached his goal. But then he describes the slow fight to reach the American Dream as paddling a boat against the current only making slow progress.
There are things in the story that tell you why he had never achieved this American Dream. One thing was him going into war...
